Waxing may seem outdated and old fashion with the introduction of Luxury Vinyl Plank, Engineered Hardwood, Tile, and other wax free flooring. Yet wax floors are far from finished. You will see Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) installed in shops, restaurants, and superstores which is designed to be waxed immediately after installation. Wax is designed for enhancing Durability & Longevity of the flooring, reducing wear, scuffs, and preserving the new appearance. This new appearance can be preserved with regular maintenance, stripping and waxing annually.

When To Wax

A floor needs to be stripped and waxed annually, and is some instances even semi-annually due to high traffic. Failure to do so will result in reduced appearance, decreased lifespan, and may result in permanent damage even early into the floor being newly installed.

Not all flooring is designed to be waxed, and while some can be wax, there can be alternative solutions to waxing, so ask a professional and do research.

When existing wax ages, it begins to turn yellow and darken. Some assume this is a discoloring of the floor or even an underlying stain caused by water or dirt. This condition is cleared up by stripping the old coat of wax away and then applying a new coat of wax

Durability comes an expense. Stripping and waxing a floor over a period of years can be cost effective over putting up the cost of replacing the floor. In high traffic areas, if the wax is not maintained, the floor will begin to wear like it would without wax. Wax is not meant to last forever, it is meant to prolong the life of the floor and protect it, appearance is a secondary objective of wax.

Too many coats of wax before stripping the floor can cause a dull effect. There is only so many coats of wax that can be applied before the product becomes ineffective at enhance the appearance of the floor. Wax can also become dull through element of the home or the commercial business. Volcanic rocks, sand, salt in the winter can abrade and erode the shine on the wax. Oil, cooking grease, solvents, and high alkaline cleaning product deform and destroy the glossy appearance of a wax floor
